Capacity Building for CSOs in North Africa: A Lever for Environmental Conservation

From December 14 to 22, 2024, the Mubadarat program of the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN-Med) organized three strategic training sessions for civil society organizations (CSOs) in Tunisia, Libya, and Morocco. These sessions are part of a regional vision for capacity building aimed at supporting nature conservation and sustainable development through better mobilization of financial resources.

Building Solid and Realistic Funding Strategies

The sessions brought together a total of 58 participants: 23 Moroccan CSOs in Rabat (December 14-15), 17 Libyan CSOs (December 19-20), and 18 Tunisian CSOs (December 21-22), from the PPI OSCAN 3, TransCap 3 programs, and the IUCN Members National Committees. These workshops, titled “Building a Funding Strategy for an Environmental Organization” were led by Mrs. Khalila Hassouna.

The primary goal of these training sessions was to strengthen the capacity of CSOs in fundraising and the development of strategic partnerships to support their nature conservation missions. Participants were guided in identifying relevant donors, developing targeted funding plans, and learning the basics of effective fundraising, including writing strong proposals to access new funding opportunities.

These sessions also provided a conducive environment for networking and cooperation among CSOs from each country, building on the regional dynamics promoted by the Mubadarat program.

A Practical and Collaborative Approach for CSOs

Group work, real-life scenarios, and role-playing exercises allowed participants to actively engage with the various stages of the fundraising cycle. From identifying donors to formulating tailored proposals, the exercises were designed based on the real needs of the participating CSOs, helping them develop funding plans aligned with their priorities.

This collective dynamic also enhanced the capacity to develop strategic partnerships. Notably, there was strong female participation, reflecting the growing engagement of local women in conservation and sustainable development in North Africa.

Towards a Structured and Autonomous North African Network

By strengthening CSOs skills in effective fundraising and project development, Mubadarat is contributing to the creation of an autonomous network of local actors capable of addressing current environmental challenges while ensuring their financial sustainability.

These trainings are just the beginning: their impact will continue through the implementation of the strategies learned, strengthening regional cooperation, and fostering a more structured and resilient civil society dedicated to ecological sustainability in North Africa.
